5 Essential Electrical Safety Tips Every Homeowner Can Easily Check

1. Look for Outlet Discolouration or Scorch Marks

Inspect your outlets for any signs of discolouration, burn marks, or unusual odours. These can indicate overheating or faulty wiring, which may be a fire risk. If you notice anything unusual, stop using the outlet and consult an electrician to investigate further.

2. Check for Loose or Warm Outlet Covers

Gently touch your outlets to ensure they aren't warm and that their covers are securely in place. Warm outlets or loose covers could signal overloaded circuits or loose connections. If you find anything out of the ordinary, unplug your devices and call an electrician.

3. Test Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Electrical issues can sometimes cause fires, so it's essential to test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly. Press the test button on each device to ensure they're functioning properly. Replace the batteries at least once a year, and consider replacing detectors older than 10 years for optimal safety.

4. Press the Test Button on RCD/RCBOs Regularly

Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and Residual Circuit Breaker with Overload (RCBOs) are designed to cut off power if they detect a fault, preventing electric shocks. Test each device by pressing the "Test" button. It should trip the circuit, cutting off power. Press "Reset" to restore power. If it doesn't respond, it may need to be checked by an electrician.

5. Look for Flickering or Dimming Lights

Flickering or dimming lights can indicate overloaded circuits or loose wiring. If you notice lights flickering frequently or dimming when other appliances are in use, it's best to have an electrician check the circuit to ensure there are no underlying issues.
